Placement Assessments

The College Board

The College Board teamed with Vantage Learning in 2000 to develop ACCUPLACER OnLine™, the first and only computer adaptive placement testing program delivered via the Internet. The application is used by more than 850 two- and four-year colleges and universities to accurately evaluate students in reading, writing and mathematics. These secure, reliable, and bias-free assessments allow institutes of higher education to immediately place students in coursework of the appropriate level. In 2006, the College Board and Vantage Learning released a new version of ACCUPLACER that has an enhanced user interface design and either retains or improves functionality from the 1.0 version.

ACCUPLACER OnLine's computer adaptive testing (CAT) engine allows the application to tailor multiple-choice tests based on an individual student's ability and to provide test results in significantly less time than traditional paper and pencil testing. With CAT, a student's performance on one test question determines the difficulty level of the next question. A test-taker's score on a CAT is determined by the number and difficulty of the questions. In addition, the application can capture student written responses to an online writing prompt. The response is scored immediately using the IntelliMetric® essay scoring engine; scores and diagnostic feedback are returned within seconds for prompt and accurate coursework placement.
