Van Nuys High School implemented the MY Access! writing program in 2005. This past year I was fortunate to work in our writing lab to support teachers and students using the program.  During that time, I observed the tremendous effect it had in helping students to improve their writing skills.  Teachers integrated classroom writing instruction, as well as literature lessons, with the MY Access! technology and tools.  While students were busily working and revising, teachers were able to circulate and give more individual help.

 

MY Access! improved our students’ ability to focus and correctly respond to a prompt, organize ideas, and write  improved essays. The program allowed students to gain immediate feedback, learn from their mistakes, revise and more thoroughly develop their essays. As they saw their score increase, they were motivated to do more.  This year our students improved their average score from their first submission to their most recent submission by an average of over 50%.

 

The multitude and variety of subject area prompts offered by MY Access! has facilitated our emphasis on writing  across the curriculum.  In addition, the program has a plethora of instructional tools, too numerous to list, for both teachers and students.   Another plus has been the alignment of the ELA standards and the use of released CAHSEE prompts.  We recently received our CAHSEE results and our student’s pass rate has dramatically improved.   MY Access! positively contributed to our students’ success.

 

Customer support is superb, has convenient hours and they are always extremely helpful. MY Access! has definitely been an effective program that  has increased our students’  writing achievement.
